Director of Finance

The City of Augusta is seeking an experienced finance professional to lead its Department of Finance and Administration. Augusta, home to Maine’s state capital, is located in the heart of the beautiful Kennebec Valley in central Maine, just an hour from Portland. Proximity to the ocean, lakes, and mountains provides limitless recreational opportunities. Augusta’s population totals almost 19,000, however, the daytime population expands to 60,000 putting it on par with Maine’s largest cities and necessitating municipal services to meet those demands.

Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the City Manager, this position serves as the Director of the Finance and Administration Department and oversees the Bureaus of Audit, Assessing, and City Clerk/Treasury/Tax Collection. Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Audit Bureau including financial reporting and auditing activities of the City, payroll, purchasing and accounts payable, debt administration, ensuring the timely and accurate reporting of the City’s financial status, and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, contracts and generally accepted accounting principles. In concert with the City Manager, the Director develops and oversees a General Fund budget of approximately $70 million plus additional enterprise and other funds. This position serves as a member of the City’s Leadership Team.

The ideal candidate will have a solid knowledge of municipal budgeting and financial policies and practices, well-developed written and oral communications skills, an ability to foster a positive work environment, and expertise in working effectively with and maintaining good working relationships with other City officials and departments, outside agencies, and citizens. A strong work ethic, integrity and problem solving skills are essential.

Requirements

A Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, business, public administration, finance or a related field is required. Considerable knowledge of accounting, public sector finance and computer information systems and at least five (5) years of related experience, including a minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience are also necessary. A Master’s degree in Business, Public Administration, Accounting or Finance and/or additional experience is desirable. A valid Class C Maine driver’s license is required.

Pay Scale

This is a full-time, exempt position with a comprehensive benefits package including medical insurance, a pension, and generous paid time off. Salary $90,937 to $118,643 annually, depending on the skills and background of the candidate.
